MURDER IN CANADA

Friday Apr 7, 2006
relentless asked:

Hormones & Police Badges DO NOT MIX. Watch carefully as this man who doesn’t understand English, who had been held/detained for ten hours in an airport, and who needed a translator is killed by rambunctious police officers in Canada.

Ryan:

First of all, the officers chose to use a method of less lethal force, IE a taser which has been proven safe and effective by the company numerous times. In law enforcement we are trained to match the force of the assailant and then exceed it by one step. If he had a weapon in his hand and refused to drop it, whether it be a stapler, a pencil, a knife, etc. it doesn’t matter, it is still being used as a weapon if he does not drop it when ordered to. The officers were justified in this case using the taser. Also, we are taught to apply as many 5 second “hits” with the taser as needed until the suspect stops resisting and it is safe to apply restraints. Another thing the general public fails to realize, the media will say and include anything in their comments and videos to get them more publicity. In this case the reporter has no idea what he is talking about when he says the officer has or appears to have his knee on the neck of the suspect. From the angle of the camera, you cannot view or determine where the officers knee is so the reporter can make assumptions but for him to actually say that, it is a false statement. For the general public who has not been trained in take-downs or restraining/applying restraints, when you have a suspect proned out on the ground (lying face-down on their stomach) you restrain the upper half of the body from moving by placing your knee on their upper-back/shoulder area. You keep from applying all your weight by kneeling while keeping both feet planted on the ground and then applying as much pressure to the shoulder as needed to control the suspect. It is unfortunate that the man lost his life but is what not due to the behavior of the officers as they were simply doing their jobs and making an unsafe situation safe. As far as the media is concerned, if a reporter told you you wouldn’t die from jumping off a cliff, would you? Don’t believe everything you hear on TV and know the facts before making assumptions and jumping to conclusions.

My sources: I am a law enforcement officer.
